You've felt it before.

That feeling you can't shake off when entering a place. That "off feeling about someone you just met. That nudge to go left instead of straight ahead today. That quiet certainty about a decision, even though you don't have proof it will work out. That tightening in your chest before a conversation goes the wrong way.

The moment something plays out exactly as you feared — or hoped — and your first thought is: I knew it.

Not because you had data. Not because someone told you. Not because the spreadsheet pointed there.

You just knew.

 

But instead of listening to that feeling, you talk yourself out of it.

Here's the story most high-achievers tell themselves:

"I'm a logical person. I make rational decisions. I don't operate on feelings."

 

And for a long time, that story serves you. It keeps you from making impulsive choices. It builds discipline. It earns respect in rooms that value hard evidence.

But at some point — usually around the time you start hitting a ceiling you can't think your way through — that story starts to cost you more than it gives.

 

Because logic is a tool for navigating known territory. It works beautifully when the variables are visible, the data is complete, you've done it before, and the path forward is clear.

Most of the decisions that actually change your life don't look like that.

Who to build with. What to say no to. Which opportunity to pursue when two look identical on paper. When you slow down. When to double down. Whether to trust someone. When to pivot. What you're actually supposed to be doing with your life.

 

These are not questions with clear answers.

And the people who keep trying to solve them with logic alone spend years in the same loop: gathering more information, seeking more opinions, running more analysis — and still feeling like they don't know what to do.

 

Meanwhile, some people seem to simply know.

They move with a quiet confidence that looks like arrogance from the outside, but up close, it is something else. They make unconventional calls that shouldn't work — and they do. They seem to always be in the right place at the right time, working with the right people, building something that fits them so perfectly.

Carl Jung described intuition as "a form of perception that bypasses the senses and originates in the unconscious."

Psychologist William James went further, suggesting that "reasoned argument is merely a surface exhibition, while intuition is the deep thing within us."

 

From this perspective, your intuition is the voice of your higher self — the part of you that is not bound by the conditioning of your upbringing, your culture, or the fear-based thinking of your ego. It is the signal beneath the noise. The compass beneath the calculation.

 

What makes this spiritually significant for performance: most of the goals we set, and most of the lives we build, are not actually ours. They come from what Vishen Lakhiani calls the culturescape — the accumulated conditioning of society, family, media, and comparison. We are running other people's programs, chasing other people's definitions of success, and then wondering why arriving at the destination feels hollow.

Intuition cuts through all of that. It is the tool that helps you question the programs of the outside world and understand what is truly aligned with your path. The only place your fulfilment really resides is inside of you. And intuition is the faculty that points you there.

Now here's what makes this impossible to dismiss, even for the most rational mind in the room: the science confirms it.

 

Dr Joel Pearson, a cognitive neuroscientist who studies intuition, defines it as "the productive use of unconscious information for better decisions and actions." Not magic. Not mysticism. A biological process in which your brain leverages learned associations that haven't yet reached conscious awareness.

Here's how it works. Your brain is constantly processing millions of pieces of information — far more than your conscious mind can handle. Most of this processing happens below the threshold of awareness. Emotional cues, pattern recognition, past experience, environmental signals — your brain is integrating all of it, all the time, and generating a response.

 

That response often arrives in the body before it arrives in the mind.

This is the gut-brain connection — the vagus nerve and the gut-brain axis through which your body acts as a physiological mirror for what your unconscious already knows. When you walk into a room, and something feels off, your brain has registered hundreds of micro-cues — tone, body language, lighting, energy — and translated them into a felt sense. That isn't imagination. That is your nervous system doing its job.

 

Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio called this the somatic marker hypothesis: the body encodes emotional and experiential memory in ways the conscious mind doesn't have direct access to. Your gut drops. Your chest tightens. Your shoulders rise. Something shifts. The body knows before the mind catches up.

And your critical mind? It's always talking. Like a radio that's on 24/7.

 

The ratio of noise to signal in most people's lives makes it nearly impossible to hear what their intuition is saying. We have built environments specifically designed to drown it out — constant input, nonstop content, exposure to strangers' opinions, and chronic busyness.

 

Brainwave states are part of why. Your analytical mind operates predominantly in beta — fast, logical, reactive, alert. Beta is useful. But intuitive information tends to arrive in the slower states: alpha (relaxed presence) and theta (the hypnagogic space between waking and sleep). These are the states accessed through meditation, stillness, long walks, and creative absorption.

 

If you live entirely in beta waves — which most high-achievers do — you are not broken. You are simply running too loud to receive the transmission.

 

There's also the issue of trust. Intuition works like a muscle: the more you listen to it, the louder it becomes. The more you ignore it, the quieter it gets.

It starts as a whisper. If you consistently override it, it stops speaking. If you follow it — even in small things — it grows stronger, louder, clearer, and more reliable.

Most people never give it the chance to grow, because they've been told it isn't real.

 

What Changes When You Learn To Use It

 

Think about the people you most admire — founders, athletes, creatives, performers who seem to operate at a level others can't replicate.

 

What they have in common isn't always a better strategy or more discipline. It's a quality of internal alignment. They know what to say in the room. They know which opportunity to take before the analysis confirms it. They know when to push and when to stop. They've built something that is theirs, it can't be copied — because it wasn't built from someone else's blueprint.

That is what access to your intuition gives you. And why it's a performance superpower.

Better decisions under uncertainty

Most decisions rarely come with complete information. You are always choosing in the fog. And the person who can access what they know — beneath the noise, beneath the anxiety, beneath what everyone else thinks they should do — moves with a clarity that isn't arrogance. It's alignment.

The edge in performance and people

Intuition is the skill that operates in the spaces logic can't reach.

Reading the energy in a negotiation before a word is spoken. Sensing when a client isn't fully bought in, even though they said yes. Knowing which relationship is worth investing in before there's evidence either way.

How To Build The Practice

Intuition is not a fixed trait. It is a skill — one that can be measured, practised, and improved. Here's how to begin.

Step 1: Create daily silence before any input

You cannot hear the signal in a full room. Ten minutes each morning before your phone, before content, before other people's thoughts enter the space. Sit. Breathe. Let the mental clutter settle.

If you don't have a daily practice of some kind — meditation, journalling, stillness — it becomes very difficult to distinguish your intuitive mind from your critical mind.

Meditation is the gym for your intuitive intelligence. The more consistent the practice, the louder the signal becomes and the quieter the noise gets.

Step 2: Formulate the right question

Intuition is most powerful when it has a clear target.

Clarissa Estés wrote in her book, Women Who Run With the Wolves:

Asking the proper question is the central action of transformation- in fairy tales, in analysis, and in individuation. The key question causes germination of consciousness. The properly shaped question always emanates from an essential curiosity about what stands behind. Questions are the keys that cause the secret doors of the psyche to swing open.

Before you need an answer, get clear on the question. Not "what should I do with my life?" but something specific: "What is the most aligned next step in this situation?"

Let the intellect refine the question. Then step aside and let the unconscious respond.

Step 3: Learn to read your body

Before making any significant decision, pause for sixty seconds before reaching outward for input. Notice what happens in your body.

Contraction — chest tightening, breath shortening, stomach knotting — is almost always fear or resistance.

Expansion — a sense of openness, calm, or quiet aliveness — tends to be the body's yes.

Your body has a language. You just haven't been taught to read it. Pay attention to the subtle physiological shifts. They are often the first sign that your unconscious is processing something your conscious mind hasn't caught up to yet.

Step 4: Distinguish intuition from fear and ego

This is the most critical skill, because not every internal signal is intuition. Here's how to tell them apart:

  • Fear is loud, urgent, and argumentative. It catastrophises. It changes depending on who you've been talking to. It wants you to retreat or act impulsively — anything to escape discomfort.

  • Ego is comparative. It asks: What does this make me look like? It gets louder when there's an audience and quieter when you're alone. It is attached to outcome, not direction.

  • Intuition is quieter. More patient. Consistent regardless of context. It doesn't argue — it just keeps showing up, pointing in the same direction, saying the same thing.

One test: remove the audience. If no one would ever know what you chose — no judgment, no opinion, no consequence to your reputation — what do you actually want to do? What surfaces in that silence is usually closer to the truth than anything arrived at through deliberation.

Another marker: intuition often makes you uncomfortable. Not because it's wrong — but because it's asking you to break out of a limited perception. Fantasy feels easy. Intuition feels like a quiet demand.

Step 5: Start small and build the feedback loop

Don't begin by making your biggest life decision on intuition alone. Start with the small ones.

Which route to take?

Which email to write first?

Who to reach out to today?

Which opportunity to say no to?

Practice trusting the signal on low-stakes choices. Over time, your calibration improves. And as the feedback loop builds — as you see the small intuitive hits prove accurate again and again — your trust in the larger ones deepens.

Keep a decision journal. Note what you felt before making a call, which voice it came from, and what the outcome was. Over months, patterns emerge. You begin to recognise the specific felt sense that precedes good decisions. You learn your own signal. 

Step 6: Access the signal states intentionally

Remember: intuition tends to arrive in alpha and theta — not in the urgent beta state of reactive thinking. Design more of these moments into your life.

Meditation.

Breathwork.

Time in nature.

The quiet before sleep.

Long walks without input.

These aren't productivity breaks. They are the conditions under which your highest intelligence operates. Don't fill every gap. The signal needs space to get through.

 

The Voice That Already Knows

You have spent years building your analytical mind. Sharpening your strategy. Studying the frameworks. Absorbing the information. And all of that matters.

But it's not all you have.

There is another intelligence.

One that doesn't operate in logic or language, one that processes faster and knows things your conscious mind hasn't figured out yet. One that is specifically calibrated to you, your path, and what you're actually here to build.

It doesn't shout. It doesn't compete with the noise. It keeps showing up, quietly, pointing in the same direction — waiting for you to get still enough to hear it.

The highest performers don't just work harder or smarter. They've learned to work from alignment. They've built the conditions to hear the signal. And when it speaks, they've developed the courage to follow it — even when the logic doesn't yet support it. 

That capacity is available to you.
